Office based general anesthesia is different than the anesthesia used in a hospital. The patients in our surgical center are not paralyzed, do not have a tube in their wind pipe or trachea, or have a machine breathing for them. They are in a relaxed sleep state breathing on their own, being monitored for their oxygen, blood pressure and breathing status. It is as if one is drunk enough or is in deep sleep that is not aware of the surroundings while procedure is being done.

Office based general anesthesia is also different from hospital anesthesia that the patient virtually is awake alert , orientated and in a state of happiness right after the procedure is over. This is due to using special short acting medications that wears off very fast and the patient has virtually no hang over.

With all these qualities, there is no need to have any concern about office based general anesthesia. Of course any surgical procedure bears some natural risks, although, very rare, the patient one needs to be aware of them. Any medical condition that increased those risks are always discussed with the patient and the anesthesia is modified and tailored for that individual to be safe and secure.
